Bishop commenced a four-year photography cadetship with the Sydney Morning Herald in 1963 (where he worked for seventeen years), becoming Australia's first Aboriginal press photographer. He was commissioned by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs to document this historic event of handing back the land to the Indigenous people.
This picture was first shot in colour and then converted to black-and-white for publishing purposes at the time, and was first released for sale in black and white, not available in colour until recent times.
